Online Surveys

Online Agent Survey

An online survey of Extension agents in tobacco producing states was fielded in November 2008.  The objective of the survey was to gather information from county agents about tobacco production in their counties.  This information helped in the design of the mail-based survey of current and former tobacco growers that was conducted in the first quarter of 2009.  The major areas of the online survey cover current production, future production expectations, post-buyout trends and production limitations.

An invitation to participate in the online survey was sent to approximately 390 county Extension agents in the following states: FL, GA, IN, KY, MD, MO, NC, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, WI and WV.

Online Grower Survey

An online survey of current and former tobacco growers was fielded in August 2008.

The Objective of this survey was to collect information from tobacco growers known to use a computer in their farming operation. Respondents provided information about crop conditions, production plans and their computer use.  Information about tobacco farmers’ computer use is important to the design of future computer-based decision aids such as farm record keeping systems and tobacco budgets.

Survey invitations were sent to approximately 950 current and former tobacco growers that have provided CTGR with an email address.  More than half of the participants providing email addresses also indicated they are actively involved in producing tobacco.
